My first job as a reporter was writing for the Caracas Daily Journal. It was the only
English language news paper in Caracas at the time. If forgot how I got the job or it came
up but the woman who had the job before me returned to the United States. I was not
yet married but living with my diplomatic husband at the time. It was a feather in his cap
because journalists are thought to be more in touch with what is going on in a foreign country.
I was covering a story at the French Embassy. It turned out the French Ambassador was the
brother of a friend who had come to wedding. He was the owner of the famous instrument
dealer in New York Jacque France His brother was quite charming and a lady killer. He was
quite smitten with me at the reception and kept trying to feel me up. His staff was trying to
control the ambassador unsuccessfully. He introduced me to the French Minister. The French
minister, to be polite came to caracas on the Venezuelan National Airlines. He asked me if I
would please put in the paper what had happened to him. He left Paris and instead of landing
in Caracas, someone bribed the pilot and they landed in Bogota. Colombia. When he finally got
to Caracas his luggage had been stolen. The intrigues of government’s are always amusing.
